Indra

Triṣṭubh (probable; verse-level verification needed)

This hymn calls Indra—“son of Strength”—to turn toward the worshippers through flawless praise, and to reward the singer with wealth, cattle, and the removal of oppressive restraints. It links Indra’s gifts to correct sacrificial action (pressing Soma, preparing foods) and to inspired speech, culminating in a “new brahman” (fresh sacred utterance) that seeks abundance to swell like rivers and steady companionship with Indra’s chariot-force.

Inside Sukta 24

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A quest for the ‘perfect praise’ that will turn Indra toward the worshippers and unlock his generosity.

  2. Development

Indra is portrayed as the hero who rewards the singer with treasures and removes oppressive constraints; the hymn then ties divine response to concrete sacrificial acts—pressing Soma and preparing offerings—met by Indra’s eager approach to the chants.

  3. Climax

Indra ‘places’ bull-like force and victorious might into the devotee who performs and praises rightly, making the sacrificer a vessel of strength.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn ends with renewed praise and a ‘new brahman,’ asking abundance to swell like rivers and seeking lasting fitness and companionship with Indra’s chariot-power.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is the mighty, bull-like hero who answers praise, drinks Soma, and bestows riches—especially cattle and victorious power—on the singer and sacrificer. He is invoked as the lord of tawny steeds (harivaḥ), a protector who drives away crushing constraints and brings expansive abundance.
  • Cosmic functionChampion of order and life-force: he releases and enlarges the waters/streams of plenty, overcomes obstructing powers, and energizes the world through victorious strength.
  • Inner significanceThe awakened will and courageous intelligence that breaks inner obstruction (fear, inertia, limitation) and converts aspiration and right action into strength, clarity, and abundance.

The seer

  • Vāmadeva GautamaGautama gotra (Vāmadeva as a seer of the Gautamas) · A major Rigvedic rishi of Mandala 4, renowned for powerful Indra hymns and for articulating inspired speech (brahman) as an effective force that draws the deity and his boons.
