Sukta 3.29

Rishi

Viśvāmitra Gāthina (family attribution for early RV 3)

Devata

Agni (manifested through manthana)

Chandas

Jagatī or Tr̥ṣṭubh (verse needs metrical verification; fire-kindling hymns often vary)

This hymn is a vivid liturgy of kindling Agni by manthana (fire-churning), treating the fire’s birth as a deliberate, sacred generation that renews the ancient rite. As Agni rises—smoke and flame as signs—he becomes the chosen Hotar who leads the sacrifice forward, grants strength and victory over obstructing forces, and brings the worshippers to the settled, “sure” seat where Soma-delight is approached through him.

Inside Sukta 29

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The hymn opens with the concrete ritual readiness: the churning-stick and the prepared generative means, calling for Agni’s birth “as in the ancient way.”

  2. Development

Agni’s emergence is celebrated as both domestic and cosmic: smoke and flame signal power, comrades are urged to advance without faltering, and Agni is praised as the gods’ ally against the Dasyus (obstructions).

  3. Climax

Agni is recognized as pṛtanāṣāṭ (battle-winner) and as the decisive force by which divine order overcomes hostile darkness—ritual fire becomes victorious spiritual power.

  4. Where it settles

The singers formally choose Agni as the discerning Hotar, asking him to come by the sure path to the sure, peaceful seat, and to lead them toward Soma-delight with knowledge of births and meanings.

The deity: Agni

  • In the VedaAgni is the “born” fire hidden in the wood, brought forth by churning, installed as household lord and sacrificial priest; he carries offerings, awakens the rite, and makes the gods present.
  • Cosmic functionMediator between earth and heaven: he transforms offerings into divine nourishment, sustains ṛta by correct sacrifice, and empowers the gods’ victorious advance against chaos and obstruction.
  • Inner significanceThe awakened will and luminous intelligence that is generated by disciplined effort; the inner fire that turns inert potential into conscious power, right speech, and forward movement toward plenitude.

The seer

  • Viśvāmitra GāthinaGāthina / Kauśika (Viśvāmitra family of Maṇḍala 3) · A paradigmatic seer-king turned brahmarṣi, celebrated for powerful mantra-vision, the Viśvāmitra lineage’s Agni hymns, and for shaping major Vedic ritual-poetic idioms of invocation and empowerment.

The rite, step by step

  • Prepare the kindling set: araṇis (upper and lower fire-sticks), churning cord, tinder/grass; establish a clean altar-space.

  • Build the fire, raise the smoke and flame as auspicious signs; establish Agni as Hotar and messenger.
  • Offer initial oblations to seat Agni firmly; request strength, unfailing progress, and victory over obstructing forces.

Frequently Asked Questions

It centers on producing Agni by manthana (churning the fire-sticks) and installing him as the Hotar who carries offerings and moves the sacrifice forward.

Because Vedic ritual treats fire as a living, sacred presence hidden in the wood; the rite “brings him to birth,” renewing divine order and vitality in the household and community.

In this context, Dasyus represent hostile obstructions—darkness, disorder, and resistance to ṛta. Agni is praised as the power by which the gods overcome these forces, giving strength and clear progress to the worshippers.
