Sukta 3.20
अग्निर्नेता भग इव क्षितीनां दैवीनां देव ऋतुपा ऋतावा । स वृत्रहा सनयो विश्ववेदाः पर्षद्विश्वाति दुरिता गृणन्तम् ॥
agnír netā́ bhága iva kṣitīnā́ṃ daivī́nāṃ devá ṛtu-pā́ ṛtā́vā | sá vṛtra-hā́ sanáyo viśva-vedā́ḥ párṣad viśvā́ ati duritā́ gṛṇántam ||
Agni is the leader like Bhaga of the divine peoples; a god guarding seasons, founded in truth. He is Vṛtra-slayer, winner, all-knower; may he carry the chanter across all difficulties.
The inner Fire is the true leader (netā) of the divine faculties within us (daivīnāṃ kṣitīnām). Like Bhaga, he apportions the right enjoyment and right share of spiritual riches. As ṛtupā and ṛtāvā, he guards the right times and rhythms of growth and is founded in truth-order. As Vṛtrahā, he breaks the coverings and resistances that block progress. He is the winner (sanayaḥ) and all-knower (viśvavedāḥ): by his guidance the seeker crosses beyond wrong turnings and inner distresses (duritā).
A true inner guide combines right timing, truth-foundation, and power to overcome resistance; with such guidance, obstacles become passages rather than dead ends.
guidance, obstacle-breaking, truth-order, safe passage
Viśvāmitra’s mandala often emphasizes leadership of Agni/Indra in the conquest of light and the overcoming of obstructing powers.
The seer frames Agni not merely as ritual fire but as the psychopomp of the path—right timing (ṛtu), truth-law (ṛta), and victory over resistance (vṛtra).
Leader of divine collectives; regulator of cosmic rhythms; conqueror of obstruction; knower and ferrier across peril.
Discriminating will that knows when and how to act; power to pierce obscurity and stabilize attainment.
Protective Agni-stuti; used to seek safe passage through rite and life

4 x ~11 syllables
Commanding and protective; strong epithets create a marching cadence.
Instills confidence and moral clarity; evokes a sense of being guided through obstacles.
Protective/prayer verse; Agni as guide and remover of obstacles; used where safe passage through rite and life is sought.
When commencing a difficult segment of ritual, travel, or undertaking; as a protective prayer for the reciter.
Praise with a petition for ‘crossing over’ difficulties.
Chant before challenging tasks or during periods of inner resistance; use as a ‘crossing mantra’ when stuck in confusion or inertia.
netā: from √nī ‘to lead’ (PIE *neh₂- ‘lead’). bhaga: ‘dispenser/share’ (PIE *bʰag- ‘to apportion’). ṛtu-pā: ṛtu ‘season/right time’ + pā ‘protect’. ṛtā́vā: ‘possessing ṛta’. vṛtra-han: ‘slayer of obstruction’ (vṛtra from √vṛ ‘cover, obstruct’). parṣat: from √pṝ/√par ‘carry across, ferry’, a crossing-over metaphor for liberation from duritā.
ṛta and right timing (ṛtu), obstruction vs release (vṛtra-han), crossing beyond difficulty (parṣat, ati duritā)
Agni as ṛtāvā embodies right law; progress is safe when aligned to ṛta.
Truth-foundation is the basis for victory over wrong passages (duritā).
Cosmic order advances by overcoming coverings; leadership of fire-consciousness maintains rhythm in manifestation.
Integral yoga psychology: obstacles are subconscient coverings; victory comes by truth-guided will.
all seasons (ṛtu principle)
Fire = guiding will; seasons = stages of growth; crossing = transition through inner crises to wider consciousness.
Invoke Agni as inner leader and timing-intelligence; offer the current obstacle as ‘Vṛtra’ to be pierced by truth-fire.
Maṇipūra (will/victory) with Ājñā (right guidance and discernment)
Exhale-focused practice: long exhale (1:2 ratio) while repeating ‘vṛtrahā… parṣat’ to release resistance; keep gentle, not forceful.
Courageous clarity; a sense of being led rather than pushing blindly.
Name your ‘duritā’ (confusion, relapse, fear). On each repetition, feel Agni as a steady lamp ahead; let action arise only when it feels ‘ṛtupā’—right-timed and true.
Apply Rigvedic accents; keep epithets distinct (netā, ṛtupā, ṛtāvā, vṛtrahā).
Slightly strengthen the cadence on the epithets; pause before the petition ‘parṣad’.
ṛtupā/ṛtāvā: vocalic ṛ; keep long ā in -vā., vṛtrahā: retroflex ṛ and clear ‘tr’ cluster., duritā: pronounce ‘du-ri-tā’ distinctly; avoid ‘durta’., gṛṇantam: syllabic ṛ; keep nasal ‘n’ before ‘t’.
Firm, protective, and clear; avoid haste so the ‘guiding’ quality remains.
