He who shines without fuel within the waters is adored by the seers in sacrifices. O Apām Napāt, give the honeyed waters by which Indra increases in heroic power.
A central psychological paradox is stated: a flame that needs no external fuel shines in the waters—meaning a self-existent divine energy (Agni principle) hidden in the life-depths and subconscient, not dependent on outer supports. The seers (viprāsaḥ) adore this inner reality in the true sacrifice (adhvara). The request is for ‘honeyed waters’—currents of consciousness filled with sweetness (ānanda) and truth—so that Indra (illumined mind) can grow in strength to conquer Vṛtra-like coverings. Delight-fed clarity empowers the mind’s heroic victory over obscurity.
The deepest power of transformation is self-luminous and inward. When the flow of consciousness becomes sweet and true, the illumined mind gains strength to overcome inner resistance.
Apām Napāt, self-luminous fire, strengthening Indra, madhu (delight)
The verse is a classic statement of the ‘secret Agni’—a cornerstone for inner Vedic interpretation: the divine is already present in the depths, awaiting recognition and adoration.
Reveals the concealed light in the cosmic waters; supplies blissful, purifying currents that empower the god of illumination (Indra).
Awakens self-sustaining aspiration and luminous vitality; converts life-streams into delight-filled truth-flow.
Soma sacrifice invocations of Apām Napāt and waters; strengthening Indra is a common Soma-sacrifice motif.

Likely 4 pādas; scan not confirmed
Bright, declarative opening (‘yo…’) followed by a prayerful imperative—creates revelation → supplication.
Kindles inward confidence (a self-lit flame exists within) and then turns it into a focused request for sweet purification.
Invocation to obtain ‘madhu’ waters that strengthen Indra—i.e., energise the victory-power in the rite and in the practitioner.
During offerings connected with waters/Soma and Indra’s empowerment
Adoration (īḻate) and petition (dāḥ) for honeyed waters; offerings made to Apām Napāt.
Mantra for self-sustained practice: recall the inner light ‘without fuel’; ask for a sweet, calm flow that strengthens clarity and courage.
anidhma ‘without kindling’ highlights autonomous fire (cf. Agni’s self-born forms). dīdayat from desiderative/intensive of √dī ‘shine’. īḷate from √īḷ ‘praise/invoke’. vavṛdhe from √vṛdh ‘grow’ (PIE *werdh-). madhumatī from madhu ‘sweet’ (PIE *médʰu, cf. Eng. mead).
hidden divine light within the subconscient (apsu antaḥ), increase of vīrya through purified delight
Honeyed waters are ṛta in motion—right flow that supports right action (vīrya).
The shining within waters is truth-light concealed in depths, revealed to vipras.
Emergence of fire/light from the waters—archetype of manifestation from the undivided deep.
Integral Vedism: transformation of life by uncovering the divine in the subconscient and feeding the illumined mind with delight-truth.
Waters = consciousness-streams; hidden fire = psychic/divine will; honey = ānanda that makes purification joyful and empowering.
Locate the ‘fuel-less flame’ as a steady point of warmth-light within a cool inner stillness; then invoke ‘honeyed flow’ through the mind to strengthen decisive clarity (Indra).
manipura (fire) supported by svadhisthana (waters)
Inhale cool clarity (waters), exhale gentle inner heat (fire) without strain; end with a soft smile to evoke ‘madhumat’ sweetness.
Luminous calm with courageous readiness.
Do not seek stimulation (‘fuel’); instead uncover what is already shining. Let sweetness (ānanda) be the purifier and the strengthener.
Not provided; recite with clear articulation of the relative clause ‘yo…’ and a marked but calm imperative on ‘dāḥ’.
Emphasize anidhmo, dīdayat, apsv antar, apāṃ napāt, madhumatīr apo, indro vāvṛdhe.
‘anidhmo’: keep short a, clear dhm cluster, ‘apsv’: pronounce p-sv cleanly, ‘īḻate’: retroflex ḻ approximated as clear ‘l’ with slight retroflexion depending on tradition
Steady, luminous, inward; let the opening line ‘shine’ with clarity.
