Sukta 1.36
त्वेषासो अग्नेरमवन्तो अर्चयो भीमासो न प्रतीतये । रक्षस्विनः सदमिद्यातुमावतो विश्वं समत्रिणं दह ॥
tvéṣāso agnér ámavanto arcáyo bhīmā́so ná pratī́taye | rakṣasvínaḥ sádam íd yātumā́vato víśvaṃ sám atríṇaṃ daha ||
Protective and purificatory recitation in Agni-offerings (homa) within Soma and non-Soma rites; functionally aligned with rakṣohā (rakṣas-slaying) moments such as evening/threshold protections in Śrauta sequences.
ṛta (right order sustained by the purifying fire), tapas (inner heat as transformative force), asat/druḥ (falsehood/hostility opposed to truth)
Agni’s burning is the enforcement of ṛta: removing crooked movement so the straight law of truth can act.
Truth is safeguarded by purification; falsehood is ‘burnt’ rather than integrated as guidance.
Fire as the evolutionary power that transforms undivided darkness into ordered light and capacity.
Proto-yogic/psychological Veda as read by Sri Aurobindo; later resonances with Vedāntic purification (śuddhi) and inner yajña.
Fire = will and aspiration; burning = transformation; ‘devouring darkness’ = tamasic inertia and subconscious obscuration that consumes energy and knowledge.
Invoke Agni in the heart as a steady, bright will that burns falsehood and compulsive suggestion.
anahata (heart)
Moderate nāḍī-śodhana for 6–12 rounds, then recite on a warm exhale emphasizing ‘daha’.
Tapasic clarity—alert, protected inwardness.
Before recitation, name the specific ‘crooked will’ (habit, fear, self-deception). Offer it mentally into a flame at the heart; end with a few breaths of quiet witnessing so the ‘ash’ settles into peace.
Mixed udātta/anudātta/svarita per Śākala tradition; key lifts often on vocatives and imperatives (e.g., agne, daha).
Keep a clear rise on udātta syllables; avoid flattening imperatives—let ‘daha’ land firmly as a command.
Differentiate retroflex ṇ in atriṇam from dental n., Hold the aspirate in bhīmāsaḥ lightly but distinctly., In yātumāvataḥ, keep long ā vowels steady; do not clip them., In tveṣāsaḥ, articulate ṣ (retroflex sibilant) clearly.
Bright, firm, slightly forceful; end with controlled resonance rather than shouting.
