Anuvaka 2

दिक्-स्तोम-प्रतिष्ठा तथा ज्योतिष्मती-स्थापन (Directional-Stoma Stabilization and Jyotiṣmatī Installations)

TS 4.4 functions as a high-density liturgical module within the Agnicayana cycle, coordinating spatial orientation (dik), metrical-stoma scaffolding (trivṛt, pañcadaśa, saptadaśa, ekaviṃśa, triṇava/trayastriṃśa), and the installation of luminous supports (jyotiṣmatī) that bind altar-space to macrocosmic order. The prapāṭhaka sequences move from ‘invigoration’ formulas that animate cosmic strata (earth–midspace–sky) and vital functions (prāṇa/apāna, senses), to explicit directional regencies with deva-adhipatis and sāman supports, then to protective/demonic apotropaic framing around the ritual perimeter. It further integrates calendrical and astral grids (ṛtu and nakṣatra catalogues) and culminates in sovereignty-protection hymnic blocks that articulate kṣatra as a stabilized field-force. In the Shrauta calendar, this chapter supplies the Adhvaryu with mantric “geometry”: it is less narrative than architectural, ensuring that each placement, seating, and boundary-making act is simultaneously a cosmological alignment and a juridical stabilization of the yajamāna’s ritual domain.

Mantra 3

Inside Anuvaka 2

Commentary nexus

  • Sayana FocusVedārtha-prakāśa: bandhu-explications linking dik/devatā/stoma/sāman to altar stability; lexical clarifications of technical epithets (e.g., jyotiṣmatī, pratiṣṭhā).
  • Bhatta Bhaskara FocusJñānayajña: procedural rationales for placements and ‘sādana’ (seating) acts; interpretive emphasis on kṣatra/ojas as ritually constituted sovereignty.

Ritual choreography

  • Shrauta Sutra RefĀpastamba/ Baudhāyana Agnicayana: dik-pratiṣṭhā and stoma-sāman anchoring around the altar perimeter (school-dependent ordering).
  • Adhvaryu ActionMarks and stabilizes the ritual directions by reciting each direction’s regent-deities and installing stoma/sāman ‘supports’ as sonic buttresses of the altar-field.

Philosophical arthavada

  • Taittiriya Brahmana CitationTB: dik as limbs of the yajña; stoma as ‘measure’ that holds space.
  • Esoteric MeaningSpace is stabilized by measure (stoma) and resonance (sāman). The directions are not coordinates but juridical-theological domains, each ‘buttressed’ by a sonic architecture.

Frequently Asked Questions

To establish a directional sovereignty grid: each dik is ritually ‘owned’ by its deva-adhipatis and stabilized by a corresponding stoma and sāman, ensuring the altar’s perimeter is metrically and theologically secured.

Catalogues of proper names (devas, sāmans, stomas) require stable pada segmentation; svara-sensitive items include compounded directionals (prācī/udīcī etc.) and enumerative stoma terms whose accent distinguishes them from adjacent epithets.
