What the texts say
In the Bhagavata Purana, Hiranyakashipu is the king of the demons, a twin son of the sage Kashyapa and Diti. Bhagavatam 3.17.18, 7.5.6 Hiranyakashipu grew furious when Vishnu, as the boar Varaha, killed his brother Hiranyaksha. Bhagavatam 7.2.1 He became conqueror of the three worlds, yet he tried to kill his son Prahlada, a great devotee of Vishnu. Bhagavatam 7.4.5, 7.1.42 Hiranyakashipu then asked Prahlada why Vishnu, said to be everywhere, was not in the pillar before him, and struck it. Bhagavatam 7.8.12, 7.8.14 Vishnu emerged as Narasimha, neither plainly man nor lion, and tore him apart in the doorway. Bhagavatam 7.8.18, 7.8.29
