Sukta 94
सांमनस्यम्। सं वो॒ मनां॑सि॒ सं व्र॒ता समाकू॑तीर्नमामसि । अ॒मी ये विव्र॑ता॒ स्थन॒ तान् वः॒ सं न॑मयामसि
sā́mmanasyám | sáṃ vo mánāṃsi sáṃ vratā́ sámākūtīr namāmasi | amī́ yé vivratā́ sthána tā́n vaḥ sáṃ namayāmasi ||
Concord of mind: your minds together, your vows together, your purposes in union—these we reverently salute. Those yonder who stand vowless, them among you we bend down into accord.
सबका मन एक हो, सबके व्रत एक हो। हम सबको नमस्ते करते हैं। जो लोग अलग चले रहे हैं, उन्हे भी साथ ले आओ। सब मिलकर काम करें।
Rishi: Atharvanic tradition (Saṃmanasya hymns often treated as communal charms)
Devata: Saṃmanasya (Concord) as an abstract power; implicitly the collective order (ṛta/dharma-like)
Chandas: Anuṣṭubh
Primary: shanta
Secondary: vira
Sāyaṇa reads the verse as a saṅghāṭa/saṃgati charm: ‘sam’ repeated to effect unification of manas, vrata, and ākūti. ‘Namāmasi’ is not mere devotion but a performative alignment. ‘Vivratāḥ’ are those outside the group’s discipline; ‘namayāmasi’ is glossed as bringing them under control—either reconciling dissent or ritually subduing disruptive elements.
To unify a community’s intentions and observances, and to subdue or reintegrate dissenters who threaten ritual/social cohesion.
Not somatic; ‘heals’ social/ritual disorder by verbal binding and reintegration of the vowless.
Conceptual parallel to restoring sattva and social dharma; reducing rajas-driven conflict.
Group cohesion intervention; conflict de-escalation; aligning team goals and norms.
paustika
Household/assembly/ritual group; specifically the ‘vivratāḥ’ (dissenters).
Unify a community’s minds, vows, and intentions; neutralize dissent by bringing it into conformity.
Saṃ-iteration (verbal binding), salutation-empowerment (namas), coercive ‘bending’ (namay-) of deviants into the group field.
Factionalism, sabotage, vow-breaking, ritual failure.
Social stability enabling prosperity, successful rites, and orderly distribution of resources.
A charm for communal harmony: the speaker salutes (namāmasi) the community’s unified minds, vows, and intentions, and ritually “bends into” concord those who stand outside shared observance.
A psychological technology of group-coherence: aligning attention (manas), commitment (vrata), and collective intention (ākūti). The “vowless” represent inner fragmentation, dissenting impulses, or unintegrated parts of the psyche that must be brought into a single aim.
Stable communities—and stable selves—arise when thought, commitment, and purpose converge; disharmony persists where shared norms and intentions are absent, and ritual speech can function as a binding social medicine.
Saṃkalpa-sādhana: unify scattered intentions into one vow-supported resolve.
Anāhata (cohesion/relational harmony)
Equal-ratio breathing (sama-vṛtti) while mentally repeating saṃ- as a unifier.
A braided cord of light linking all participants at the heart level, tightening gently into one rhythm.
Collected, socially attuned steadiness (sattvic coherence).
Speak slowly with emphasis on saṃ; after chanting, state one shared vow and one shared intention in plain language to ‘seal’ the mantra’s work.
Simple Atharvanic recitation; keep a steady mid-register with slight lift on saṃ- clusters.
Stress semantic binders: saṃ / vrata / ākūti / vivratāḥ; make the final verb (namayāmasi) decisive.
Keep nasalization clear in manāṃsi, Differentiate vrata (vra-) from varta (avoid epenthetic vowel), Pronounce vivratāḥ with clear vi-vra-
Firm, inclusive, assembly-leading tone.
Best done responsorially: leader recites first hemistich, group repeats; the social form amplifies the saṃmanasya effect.
Family dispute, team conflict, community meeting, or before a shared ritual/decision.
At the start of a gathering; repeat after agreements are made to ‘seal’ them.
Greater unity of purpose, reduced factional friction, smoother cooperation.
The ‘bending’ line is coercive in tone; in modern use, frame it ethically as reintegration rather than domination.
