iḍā́yāḥ padáṁ ghṛ́tavat sarīsṛ́paṁ jātavedo práti havyā́ gṛbhāya | yé grāmyā́ḥ paśávo viśvárūpās téṣāṁ saptā́nāṁ máy i rántiḥ astu ||
The seat of Iḍā, rich with ghee, that gliding course,—O Jātavedas, take thou to thee the offerings. And of the village cattle, manifold in form,—of those seven—let there be for me secure enjoyment.
Agni Jātavedas is asked to accept offerings at the ghee-rich ‘seat of Iḍā,’ described as gliding. The speaker then asks for secure enjoyment/possession of the seven kinds (or a complete set) of village cattle, manifold in form.
Iḍā is the inner ‘share’ of nourishment—what is rightfully integrated rather than wasted. Agni is discernment that metabolizes offerings (food, effort, emotion). The ‘seven cattle’ are a complete livelihood portfolio: stable, diverse supports for life.
When nourishment is rightly apportioned and consciously ‘digested’ (Agni), prosperity becomes stable enjoyment rather than anxious hoarding; completeness (sevenfold) arises from ordered exchange.
To have Agni accept ghee-rich offerings and to secure stable enjoyment/possession of a complete (sevenfold) set of domestic cattle
इडा॑याः । प॒दम् । घृ॒तव॑त् । स॒री॒सृ॒पम् । जा॒त॒वे॒दः॒ । प्रति॑ । ह॒व्या । गृ॒भा॒य॒ । ये । ग्रा॒म्याः । प॒शवः॑ । वि॒श्वरू॑पाः । तेषाम् । सप्ता॒नाम् । मयि॑ । रन्तिः॑ । अ॒स्तु॒ ।
Sāyaṇa reads Iḍā as the sacrificial nourishment-person (linked with the iḍā portion and prosperity). ‘Ghṛtavat’ marks the offering’s auspicious nutritive potency. Agni as Jātavedas must ‘grasp’ the havis to effect transfer. ‘Seven’ is treated as a completeness-number for cattle-wealth (a ritually total herd), and ‘ranti’ as stable enjoyment/possession rather than mere pleasure.
Atharvanic tradition (anonymous/collective seer)
Paustika rites of cattle-wealth and domestic stability; Agni-centered offering logic as household prosperity technology.
Shows the Atharvan synthesis: prosperity is secured by correct offering (Agni) plus correct ‘share’ (Iḍā), yielding stable enjoyment (ranti).
Agni Jātavedas (with Iḍā as prosperity-current)
Agni as the universal transformer who receives offerings and converts them into ordered prosperity; Iḍā as the rightful portion that stabilizes exchange.
Supports ‘agni’ in the broad sense: digestion/metabolic clarity; restores coherence by transmuting inputs into vitality.
Guards wealth from dissipation by making it ritually legitimate and ‘digestible’; protects the herd/household through sacrificial order.
4 pādas of ~8 syllables; first half dense with epithets, second half with clear request.
Compound heaviness (iḍāyāspadam, ghṛtavat, sarīsṛpam) can compress; chant with deliberate sandhi clarity.
Smooth in the first half (matching ‘gliding’), then firm in the petition for ranti.
Creates a sense of steady flow of offerings into stable possession.
Prepare a ghṛta-rich oblation and establish the iḍā-place/portion in the domestic rite sequence.
Invoke Agni as Jātavedas; at the moment of offering, recite ‘prati havyā gṛbhāya’ while placing the oblation into the fire.
After the offering, recite the cattle-benefit clause, directing the wish toward the patron’s herd (often with a gesture toward cattle-shed direction or by touching a cattle-hair/rope if used in the karman).
Conclude with a sealing act (śānti) to stabilize ‘ranti’—secure enjoyment—over the herd.
Kauśika Sūtra: paustika rites for cattle-prosperity and Ekāṣṭakā/Aṣṭakā offerings employing ghṛta and Agni-invocation (general application; edition-dependent numbering)
Atharvan priest: manages iḍā/ghṛta offering sequence, ensures Agni’s acceptance, and verbally ‘fixes’ cattle-prosperity for the patron
Recited during ghee-offering (small homa) in prosperity rites, especially those connected with annual observances; also suitable when acquiring/protecting livestock or stabilizing household food stores.
Morning or evening fire-offering; season/annual hinge-days; before moving cattle or beginning grazing cycle.
Householder with domestic fire or Atharvan specialist; emphasis on correct offering portion (iḍā).
Recite before a meal-offering (naivedya) or lamp-lighting, dedicating a ‘portion’ to gratitude/charity to embody iḍā.
ghṛta (ghee); havis (oblation); iḍā (offering-portion/personification); grāmya paśu (domestic cattle)
Agni Jātavedas explicitly; havis presumes fire-offering.
Ghee is concentrated nourishment/ojas; fire is transformation; cattle are embodied prosperity that reproduces. Iḍā is the ‘right portion’ ensuring the exchange is stable and non-destructive.
General depletion/weakness framed as lack of nourishment/ojas; indirectly digestive/metabolic weakness (agnimāndya) by invoking Jātavedas and ghṛta.
Strengthening the inner ‘Agni’ (metabolic/transmutative fire) through ghee-rich offering symbolism; stabilizing ‘ranti’ (secure enjoyment) reduces stress-driven depletion.
Agni (digestive fire), ghṛta as ojas-supportive; paśu/food security as a foundation for health.
Nutrition security and stress reduction; mindful eating/ritualized meals improving metabolic regularity.
Household prosperity, cattle assets, food security
Agni’s acceptance of offerings and the securing of a complete set of domestic cattle-wealth for stable enjoyment.
Offering-transfer: establish the ‘seat of Iḍā’ (right share), feed Agni with ghee, then claim legitimate ranti as the return-flow.
Loss of livestock, unstable income/food supply, wasteful dissipation of resources
Cattle, nourishment, stable enjoyment/possession
Kindle inner Agni: feel a steady warmth at the navel that ‘receives’ life inputs and converts them into calm strength.
Maṇipūra (Agni/metabolic center)
Gentle, warming breath (no force): slow inhale to navel expansion, slow exhale; optionally mild agni-sāra (very light) if appropriate.
A golden fire receiving a drop of ghee; from it, seven luminous cattle-symbols stand calmly within a protective enclosure.
Grounded vitality with restraint—‘secure enjoyment’ without craving.
Chant before meals; after chanting, take the first bite mindfully as ‘havis’ to inner Agni, then pause to sense satiety (ranti).
Anuṣṭubh with a smooth first half; emphasize jāta-vedas and rantiḥ as semantic peaks.
Break compounds audibly: iḍāyāḥ | padam | ghṛtavat | sarīsṛpam.
Warm, steady, ‘offering’ tone; not aggressive.
The ‘seven’ request pairs well with 7 recitations as a ritual count in paustika context.
7 times
Seeking stable livelihood, food security, or recovery from depletion through regular nourishment and routine.
Before a ghee lamp/homa, before meals, or when starting a new livelihood cycle (job, farming season).
Greater sense of stability and ‘right share’; calmer relationship to resources; symbolic strengthening of inner Agni.
If using actual fire offerings, follow safety; if health issues involve digestion/metabolism, consult a clinician—use as supportive practice.
The active ‘substance’ is ghṛta (a processed animal product) and iḍā (ritual nourishment-current). Rather than herbs, prosperity is pharmacologized through unction: ghee signifies life-sap and smooth transfer, while iḍā anchors the offering’s nutritive agency.
Cattle are the household’s economic foundation; the mantra frames their secure enjoyment (ranti) as dependent on correct fire-offering and priestly speech, reinforcing ritual mediation of property stability.
Agni Jātavedas and havis-language are RV-shared; the explicit iḍā-seat and the ‘sevenfold’ cattle-totality reflect a more domestic-accounting orientation typical of Atharvanic prosperity rites.
Gopatha’s logic of transfer (offering accepted by Agni becomes worldly benefit) matches the imperative ‘gṛbhāya’: acceptance is the causal hinge. The iḍā locus functions as a bandhu-point where nourishment is ritually ‘seated’ and then externalized as cattle-wealth.
