वाच॑म॒ष्टाप॑दीम॒हं नव॑स्रक्तिमृत॒स्पृश॑म्। इन्द्रा॒त् परि॑ त॒न्वं ममे
vā́cam aṣṭā́padīm aháṃ návasraktim ṛtaspṛ́śam | índrāt pári tanvàṃ mame
Speech—eight-footed, nine-garlanded, touching Order—this I encompass: from Indra I measure it round about my body.
मैं बात को अपने आप में समेट लेता हूँ। यह बात आठ पैर वाली है, नौ हार वाली है, और सच्चाई को छूती है। मैं इंद्र से यह बात अपने शरीर के आस-पास नाप लेता हूँ।
Rishi: Ṛgvedic provenance (Vāc hymnic material); specific seer not supplied here.
Devata: Vāc / Indra (speech empowered by Indra)
Chandas: Likely Anuṣṭubh (requires verification).
Primary: shanta
Secondary: vira
Vāc is treated as a quasi-personal power with metrical ‘feet’ and adornment, whose contact with ṛta guarantees unfailing effect. ‘Measuring around the body’ is read as establishing a protective enclosure (paridhi/bandha) by mantra; Indra is the empowering source, lending invincibility and force to the spoken boundary.
To create a protective mantric enclosure around the body, ensuring truth-backed efficacy and Indra-derived strength against harm, disease, and hostile speech.
Anxiety, fear, speech-related distress, psychosomatic vulnerability; adjunct for ailments worsened by stress.
tanū (body)
Boundary-making through truthful mantra; cognitive reframing; invoking Indraic confidence to neutralize hostile inputs.
Supports sattva and prāṇa-vāyu regulation; reduces vāta aggravation linked to fear and scattered speech.
Grounding/self-affirmation practices; protective visualization used in trauma-informed approaches.
shantika
The chanter’s body-mind field; hostile speech/energies.
To create a protective enclosure around the body using vāc aligned with ṛta, empowered by Indra.
Kavaca-by-speech: metrical ‘bands’ (navasrakti) imagined as garlands; parimā (measuring around) as ritual circumscription.
Curses, slander, intimidation, intrusive thoughts, ‘evil eye’ via speech.
The speaker encompasses Speech—eight-footed, nine-garlanded, touching Ṛta—and measures it around the body from Indra, forming an enclosure.
Vāc is a structured power with multiple ‘steps’ and ‘bands’: disciplined language and truthful intention create psychological boundaries; Indra represents sovereign confidence that empowers speech to protect rather than wound.
Words shape reality. When speech is aligned with order (ṛta) and properly ‘bounded’ (measured around), it becomes protection—clarity against chaos, truth against distortion.
Mantra as boundary: feel speech as eight steps establishing a stable inner ground; nine garlands as layered protection.
Viśuddha (speech) with support from Maṇipūra (Indraic power) (interpretive).
Box breathing (4-4-4-4) or slow equal breathing to ‘measure’ evenly around the body.
Nine luminous garlands forming concentric rings around the body; a clear blue sheath at the throat; Indraic golden spark at the navel.
Dhāraṇā on ṛta-touching speech; steadiness of intention.
Speak less but more truly; let daily speech become the practice—reduce harshness, increase clarity, keep promises (ṛta).
Steady, even recitation; keep long vowels clear (vācam, mame). Exact udātta/anudātta requires padapāṭha accent data.
Emphasize ṛtaspṛśam (truth-contact) and indrāt (source of strength).
aṣṭāpadīm: articulate ṣṭ clearly, navasraktim: keep -sr- cluster clean, ṛta: short ṛ vowel, not ri
Low, resonant, protective; minimal ornamentation.
For ‘kavaca’ effect, pair with a clockwise self-circumambulation gesture (hand tracing a circle) at the end of each repetition.

Before confrontation, legal/office meetings, public speaking, or when feeling psychically ‘leaky’ and affected by others’ words.
Immediately before entering a challenging environment; also after exposure to harsh speech to re-center.
Stronger boundaries, clearer speech, reduced anxiety, sense of protection.
Avoid using ‘protective speech’ as justification for aggression; keep alignment with ṛta (truth/ethics).
