Remedies & Counter-Charms
Atharvaveda Kāṇḍa 2 consolidates the Atharvanic art of restoring wholeness (sampad) by loosening bonds—disease, curse, hostile intent—and re-establishing auspicious order (ṛta) in body and home. Across its four anuvākas it moves from curative release and protective knowledge to apotropaic boundary-rites, reversal of hostility back to its source, and renewed vitality through expulsion of disease-agents. The hymns treat concrete afflictions (fevers, wounds, poisons and bites) alongside threats from rakṣas and sorcery, showing a characteristic blend of medicine, ritual, and moral-cosmic stabilization. It is also notable for mantras supporting childbirth and safeguarding infants, extending healing from the individual to lineage and household continuity.
4 anuvakas (sections) to explore.
Restoring wholeness and auspicious order through Atharvanic knowledge, protective powers, and curative release from bindings
Protection of life-force and household territory through reversal of hostility and rakṣa (apotropaic) rites
Reversal-and-protection: turning hostility back, securing bodily safety, and stabilizing life, livestock, and desire through divine radiance, herbs, and order (ṛta).
Restoring vitality by expelling disease-agents and re-securing social–ritual order
Kāṇḍa 2 primarily develops healing (bhaiṣajya) through ‘release from bindings’—driving out disease and restoring wholeness—while also emphasizing rakṣa protection of the household and reversal of hostility back to its source.
They progress from restoring wholeness through Atharvanic curative power (2.1), to protecting life-force and domestic territory via apotropaic rites (2.2), to reversal-and-protection stabilizing body, livestock, and desire through radiance, herbs, and ṛta (2.3), and finally to renewed vitality by expelling disease-agents and re-securing social–ritual order (2.4).
Alongside disease and poison remedies, it preserves significant formulas for childbirth and infant protection, showing how Atharvanic healing extends from individual cure to safeguarding lineage, home, and ritual order.
