Mantra 3

Mantra 4

Inside Sukta 88

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A deliberate ‘bringing forward’ of the dearest thought and praise to Varuṇa, the vast bull of power who turns worship toward the seeker.

  2. Development

Varuṇa’s sovereign action is unfolded: he directs the yajña’s force, bestows plenitude, and is personally connected to the seer through divine guidance and inspiration.

  3. Climax

The autobiographical revelation that Varuṇa placed Vasiṣṭha in the boat and made him an ṛṣi by mighty workings (a seal of Varuṇa’s intimate lordship and grace).

  4. Where it settles

A prayer for liberation from Varuṇa’s bond and for enduring protection and well-being from Aditi and the Ādityas, settling the hymn into śānti.

The deity: Varuṇa

  • In the VedaVaruṇa is the majestic Āditya who sees all, measures the worlds, and binds the wrongdoer with pāśa (noose), yet is also mīḻhuṣ—gracious and responsive to sincere praise and confession.
  • Cosmic functionGuardian of ṛta: stabilizes heaven and earth, maintains moral and cosmic law, and oversees waters and the far-reaching expanse (urú/bṛhánt).
  • Inner significanceThe inner judge and healer of conscience: recognition of fault, turning toward truth, and the liberating release from inner ‘bonds’ of guilt, fear, and disorder through alignment with ṛta.

The seer

  • VasiṣṭhaVasiṣṭha gotra (one of the Seven Ṛṣis/Saptarṣi) · Foremost among the Vedic seers, famed for profound Varuṇa hymns, mastery of ṛta/ethical truth, and as the traditional purohita of the Bharatas (linked with Sudās).
