taṃ prāpta-vijayaṃ vālī sugrīvaṃ plavageśvaraḥ | ābhāṣya vyaktayā vācā sa-sneham idam abravīt ||
Vali, the lord of monkeys, lovingly said to Sugriva, who had won a victory:
Dharma in leadership includes clarity and goodwill in counsel—especially when settling conflict and guiding rightful governance.
After Sugriva’s success and Vali’s defeat, Vali begins a final, affectionate address that frames the ensuing instructions.
Magnanimity and lucidity: Vali speaks plainly and with affection despite the crisis.
