नारदकथितं माधव्याः तपश्चर्या–ययातेः स्वर्गविचारः | Nārada on Mādhavī’s Asceticism and the Scrutiny of Yayāti in Heaven
इष्ट्वा ते पुण्डरीकेण दत्ता राज्ञा द्विजातिषु । तेभ्योद्े द्वे शते क्रीत्वा प्राप्ते तैः पार्थिवैसतदा
iṣṭvā te puṇḍarīkeṇa dattā rājñā dvijātiṣu | tebhyo dve śate krītvā prāpte taiḥ pārthivais tadā ||
नारद ने कहा—राजा ने पुण्डरीक नामक यज्ञ करके वे घोड़े द्विजों को दक्षिणा रूप में दान कर दिए। फिर अन्य राजाओं ने उन ब्राह्मणों से दो-दो सौ घोड़े खरीदकर उन्हें प्राप्त कर लिया।
नारद उवाच
The verse underscores dharmic kingship expressed through yajña and dāna: wealth is offered to the Brahmins as dakṣiṇā, yet it may legitimately circulate back into worldly use through fair purchase—showing a balance between religious merit and practical governance.
Nārada narrates that King Puṇḍarīka, after completing a sacrifice, gifted horses to Brahmins; later, other kings bought two hundred horses each from those Brahmins and thereby acquired them.
