Vāmadeva’s Counsel on Rooted Kingship and Non-violent Victory (वामदेवोपदेशः—दृढमूलराजधर्मः)
bhogeṣūdayamānasya bhūteṣu ca dayāvataḥ | vardhate tvaramāṇasya viṣayo rakṣitātmanaḥ ||
A ruler’s lasting increase comes from a blend of prosperity managed without excess, compassion toward all beings, swift execution of duties, and disciplined self-care/self-restraint; ethical character and effective action together secure the growth of the realm.
In the Śānti Parva’s instruction on kingship, the sage Vāmadeva is speaking, laying down practical marks of a flourishing king—mercy, energetic governance, and self-guarding discipline—by which a kingdom’s power and stability expand.
