वह लोगोंसे कहे--'सज्जनो! अपने देशपर यह बहुत बड़ी आपत्ति आ पहुँची है। शत्रुदलके आक्रमणका महान् भय उपस्थित है। जैसे बाँसमें फलका लगना बाँसके विनाशका ही कारण होता है, उसी प्रकार मेरे शत्रु बहुत-से लुटेरोंको साथ लेकर अपने ही विनाशके लिये उठकर मेरे इस राष्ट्रको सताना चाहते हैं ।।
bhīṣma uvāca | asyām āpadi ghorāyāṃ samprāpte dāruṇe bhaye | paritrāṇāya bhavataḥ prārthayiṣye dhanāni vaḥ ||
भीष्म ने कहा— “इस घोर आपत्ति और दारुण भय के आ पड़ने पर मैं आप लोगों से धन माँगता हूँ—अपने सुख के लिए नहीं, बल्कि आप सबकी रक्षा के लिए। ऐसे संकट में सामूहिक रक्षा हेतु साधन जुटाना धर्म है; क्योंकि प्रजा की सुरक्षा और राज्य का संरक्षण समय पर मिले सामूहिक सहयोग पर ही निर्भर है।”
