केनैष धर्म: कथितो देवेन ऋषिणापि वा
Janamejaya uvāca | kenaiṣa dharmaḥ kathito devena ṛṣiṇāpi vā, bhagavan? asya bhaktirūpasya dharmasya kaḥ devatā vā ṛṣiḥ vā upadeṣṭā? ananya-bhaktānāṃ jīvanacaryā kā? sa ca kadā prācīnaḥ pravṛttaḥ? mama saṃśayaṃ nivāraya; etad-viṣayaṃ śrotuṃ mama manasi mahān autkaṇṭhyaḥ ||
जनमेजय ने कहा— “भगवन्! यह धर्म किसने बताया—किसी देवता ने या किसी ऋषि ने? भक्ति-स्वरूप इस धर्म का प्रथम उपदेशक कौन था? अनन्य भक्ति रखने वालों की जीवन-चर्या कैसी है, और यह परम्परा कब से चली आ रही है? कृपा करके मेरा संशय दूर कीजिए; इस विषय को सुनने के लिए मेरा मन अत्यन्त उत्कण्ठित है।”
