Aśmagīta: Janaka’s Inquiry on Loss, Kāla, and the Limits of Control (अश्मगीता)

निर्माणे यस्य यद्‌ दिष्टं तेन गच्छति सेतुना । रोग

nirmāṇe yasya yad diṣṭaṃ tena gacchati setunā | rogo 'gnir jalaṃ śastraṃ bubhukṣā pipāsā vipattir viṣaṃ jvaraś ca uccasthānād patanaṃ ca—etāni sarvāṇi jīvasya mṛtyu-nimittāni | janma-kāle yasya yac chubha-aśubhaṃ prārabdha-vaśān nimittaṃ niyataṃ kṛtaṃ tad eva tasya setuḥ; tenaiva sa gacchati, arthāt paralokaṃ yāti |

जनक बोले—प्राणी के जन्म के समय प्रारब्धवश जिसके लिए जो अंत-निमित्त नियत किया गया है, उसी ‘सेतु’ से वह जाता है। रोग, अग्नि, जल, शस्त्र, भूख, प्यास, विपत्ति, विष, ज्वर और ऊँचाई से गिरना—ये सब मृत्यु के अवसर मात्र हैं; परंतु जिस निमित्त का विधान जन्म के साथ हो चुका है, उसी के द्वारा वह परलोक को प्रस्थान करता है।
