Adhyāya 166: Kṛtaghna-doṣa (कृतघ्नदोषः) — the fault of ingratitude and the limits of expiation

सुरापान ब्रह्म॒हत्या गुरुतल्पमथापि वा । अनिर्देश्यानि मन्यन्ते प्राणान्‍्तमिति धारणा

Transliteration

surāpāna-brahmahatyā guru-talpam athāpi vā | anirdeśyāni manyante prāṇāntam iti dhāraṇā ||

Translation

भीष्म ने कहा—मदिरापान, ब्रह्महत्या और गुरुपत्नीगमन—इन पापों के लिए कोई साधारण प्रायश्चित्त निर्धारित नहीं माना गया है। विद्वानों की धारणा है कि इनका प्रायश्चित्त केवल प्राणान्त, अर्थात् किसी उपाय से अपने जीवन का अंत करना ही है।
