शार्दूलस्तं तु गोमायुं स्नेहात् प्रोत्फुल्ललोचन: । अवारयत् स धर्मिष्ठ पूजया प्रतिपूजयन्,शेरने धर्मात्मा गीदडड़का भलीभाँति आदर-सत्कार करके उसे उपवाससे रोक दिया। उस समय उसके नेत्र स्नेहसे खिल उठे थे
śārdūlas taṃ tu gomāyuṃ snehāt protphullalocanaḥ | avārayat sa dharmiṣṭhaḥ pūjayā pratipūjayan |
भीष्म ने कहा—धर्मिष्ठ व्याघ्र ने स्नेह से प्रफुल्ल नेत्रों वाला होकर गीदड़ के आदर का आदरपूर्वक प्रत्युत्तर दिया; सत्कार-पूजा करके उसने उसे उपवास करने से रोक दिया। इससे यह प्रकट होता है कि धर्म केवल तप का आग्रह नहीं, बल्कि भक्ति के प्रति करुणापूर्ण, जीवन-रक्षक विवेक है।
