दिशश्चव सैन्यं च शितैरजिह्ागै: परस्पर प्रावृणुतां सुदंशितौ । जैसे पूर्वकालमें देवताओंका असुरोंके साथ संग्राम हुआ था
sañjaya uvāca |
diśaś caiva sainyaṃ ca śitair ajihāgaiḥ parasparaṃ prāvṛṇutāṃ sudaṃśitau |
संजय बोले—वे दोनों सुदंष्ट्र, कवचधारी वीर अपने तीक्ष्ण, सर्प-सदृश बाणों से एक-दूसरे के विरुद्ध दिशाओं और सेनाओं को ढकने लगे। जैसे प्राचीन काल में देवताओं और असुरों का संग्राम हुआ था, वैसे ही पाण्डवों और कौरवों का दारुण, तुमुल युद्ध आरम्भ हुआ; और अर्जुन तथा कर्ण की बाण-वृष्टि से छिड़े उस घोर संग्राम में मानो समस्त रणक्षेत्र शरों से आच्छादित हो गया।
