Chapter 6: Yudhiṣṭhira’s Renunciatory Appeal and Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Resolve for the Forest
भूमिरल्पफला देया विपरीतस्य भारत
bhūmir alpaphalā deyā viparītasya bhārata
धृतराष्ट्र बोले: हे भारत, जो विरोध में खड़ा हो, उसे भी अल्पफल देने वाली भूमि तक दे देनी चाहिए—ताकि अभाव से वैर न बढ़े और न्यायोचित समझौते का मार्ग खुला रहे।
धघतयाट्र उवाच
Even toward an adversary, a ruler should uphold dharma through measured generosity—granting at least minimal means (like low-yield land) to prevent resentment, reduce conflict, and preserve social order.
In the Ashramavāsika context, Dhṛtarāṣṭra offers counsel framed as royal ethics, addressing “Bhārata” (Yudhiṣṭhira) and urging a conciliatory policy: give even modest land to an opponent rather than intensify enmity.
