Brāhmaṇa-vandana: Criteria for Veneration, Disciplined Speech, and Protective Kingship (अनुशासनपर्व, अध्याय ८)
दण्डपाणियर्यथा गोषु पालो नित्यं हि रक्षयेत् । ब्राह्मणान् ब्रह्म च तथा क्षत्रिय: परिपालयेत्
daṇḍapāṇir yathā goṣu pālo nityaṁ hi rakṣayet | brāhmaṇān brahma ca tathā kṣatriyaḥ paripālayet ||
भीष्म ने कहा—“जैसे हाथ में डंडा लिये ग्वाला सदा गौओं की रक्षा करता है, वैसे ही क्षत्रिय का कर्तव्य है कि वह ब्राह्मणों और ब्रह्म—अर्थात् वैदिक धर्म-व्यवस्था—की निरन्तर रक्षा करे।”
