FAQs

This verse transmits classificatory cosmological knowledge: it enumerates four functional/types of Vyantaras and states their counted subdivisions (26), along with a further counted group called the Gonasas (16).

By preserving precise taxonomies and numeric breakdowns of non-human classes (semi-divine beings), the chapter functions like a reference catalogue—typical of the Agni Purana’s encyclopedic style of organizing cosmology, beings, and their categories.

Knowing such classifications is traditionally treated as part of purāṇic cosmological literacy (jñāna): it supports right understanding of the universe’s orders of beings, aiding discernment and reinforcing faith in the structured moral-cosmic order described by the Purāṇas.
