Adhyaya 24: The Birth of the Nāgas, Brahmā’s Curse, and the Pañcamī Observance

Nāgajanma-Brahmaśāpa-Pañcamīvrata

Ritual-Etiology and Cosmic Governance (Dharma/Prāyaścitta)

Inside Adhyaya 24

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Pṛthivī questions Varāha about the embodiment of powerful beings as nāgas and the karmic/contact-based causes behind serpent-form birth, setting a problem of terrestrial safety and cosmic order.

  2. Central event

An embedded narration begins: after news of Gaṇapati’s birth, King Prajāpāla asks a sage how tārkṣya-related beings became serpents; the sage recounts Brahmā’s lineage (Marīci → Kaśyapa → Kadru) and the birth of the principal nāgas, whose venomous aggression produces daily human decline and social destabilization.

  3. Climax resolution

Beings seek refuge in Brahmā/Viṣṇu; Brahmā regulates the crisis by imposing maryādā: assigning nāgas to subterranean realms (Pātāla/Vitala and a named dwelling such as Harmya), establishing a human–nāga compact, and prophesying their future checking/subjugation by Garuḍa and Citrabhānu—coexistence through zoning and rule-setting rather than annihilation.

  4. Closing phalashruti

Pañcamī is declared a purifying, auspicious tithi; observance with restraint, avoidance of sour foods, and nāga-bathing with milk yields purification and promotes human–nāga amity, protecting household and community from serpent-related harm.

Geographical context

Pātāla, Vitala, Rasātala; Harmya (as a designated subterranean dwelling/realm-name within the narrative’s cosmography).

Tirtha focus

  • Pilgrimage MeritMerit is framed less as travel to a named tīrtha and more as time-sacrality: Pañcamī observance functions as a dharmic ‘tīrtha-in-time’ that purifies and stabilizes interspecies relations.

Ritual instructions

  • Primary RitualNāga-Pañcamī observance (Pañcamī-vrata with nāga-snāpana)
  • BenefitPurification (śuddhi/prāyaścitta), reduction of serpent-related fear and harm, and reinforcement of social-ecological balance through sanctioned coexistence.

The narrative frame

  • Varāha (with an embedded sage narrator recounting Brahmā’s creation lineage)Pṛthivī (with an embedded listener: King Prajāpāla) · Didactic and regulatory—etiology used to teach dharma as governance (maryādā and samaya) and to ground a calendrical observance.

The emotional journey

  • Dominant RasaŚānta (with undercurrents of Bhayānaka)
  • Emotional ProgressionInquiry and uncertainty → fear and urgency as human decline is described → reassurance through Brahmā’s imposed limits → calm restoration via Pañcamī discipline and reconciliation-oriented practice.

Planning a pilgrimage

  • Visit FeasibilityPrimarily a vrata-centered chapter rather than a site-centered itinerary; feasible as a home/temple observance on Pañcamī, with optional visit to local Nāga-devatā shrines or serpent-grove traditions where culturally appropriate.
  • Best SeasonŚrāvaṇa (monsoon season) Pañcamī is widely associated with Nāga-Pañcamī observance in later practice; locally, follow the pañcāṅga for the relevant Pañcamī.
  • Related FestivalNāga-Pañcamī

Frequently Asked Questions

The text models conflict regulation through maryādā (limits) and samaya (compact): harmful nonhuman power (nāga venom/aggression) is constrained by spatial assignment (subterranean realms) and behavioral conditions, framing dharma as governance that protects human life while enabling coexistence rather than total annihilation.

The chapter explicitly elevates Pañcamī (the fifth lunar day) as a dhanyā and śubhā tithi. It prescribes a Pañcamī discipline: practicing restraint (saṃyata), avoiding sour foods (amla-parivarjana), and bathing nāgas with milk (kṣīra-snāpana) to cultivate amity.

Through Pṛthivī’s framing and the embedded crisis of daily human decline, the narrative treats unchecked venomous predation as destabilizing the world’s continuity. Brahmā’s intervention establishes ecological-territorial zoning (Pātāla/Vitala/Rasātala) and interspecies rules, presenting balance as a managed distribution of habitats and restrained interaction.

The genealogy runs Brahmā → Marīci → Kaśyapa, with Kadru (a Dākṣāyaṇī) as mother of the nāgas. Named nāga figures include Ananta, Vāsuki, Kambala, Karkoṭaka, Padma, Mahāpadma, Śaṅkha, Kulika, and Aparājita. Other referenced figures include Garuḍa (Suparṇa) and Citrabhānu, along with King Prajāpāla and a sage narrator (Mahātapā).
