पार्वतीवाक्यं—शिवस्य परब्रह्मत्व-निरूपणम्
Pārvatī’s Discourse: Establishing Śiva as Parabrahman
तस्यैव भजनाज्जीवो मृत्युं जयति निर्भयः । तस्मान्मृत्युंजयन्नाम प्रसिद्धम्भुवनत्रये
tasyaiva bhajanājjīvo mṛtyuṃ jayati nirbhayaḥ | tasmānmṛtyuṃjayannāma prasiddhambhuvanatraye
માત્ર તેમના ભજનથી જીવ નિર્ભય બની મૃત્યુને જીતે છે; તેથી તેઓ ત્રિભુવનમાં ‘મૃત્યુંજય’ નામે પ્રસિદ્ધ છે।
Sūta Gosvāmin (narrating the glory of Śiva to the sages, within the Rudra Saṃhitā discourse)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Nīlakaṇṭha
Jyotirlinga: Tryambakeśvara
Sthala Purana: The epithet Mṛtyuñjaya evokes Śiva as the giver of victory over death; in the Tryambakeśvara region the Mṛtyuñjaya-mantra tradition is especially prominent, with Śiva granting protection from untimely death and fear.
Significance: Darśana and worship are sought for āyus (longevity), removal of mṛtyu-bhaya (fear of death), and śiva-anugraha leading toward liberation.
Type: mahamrityunjaya
Role: liberating
The verse teaches that sincere devotion (bhajana) to Śiva transforms the jīva from fear-bound mortality to fearlessness by Śiva’s grace, pointing to liberation where death no longer has spiritual dominion.
Calling Śiva “Mṛtyuñjaya” highlights His accessible, saguna grace: through concrete worship—often centered on the Śiva-liṅga—the devotee receives protection from the dread of death and is led toward mokṣa.
The takeaway is steady Śiva-bhajana—regular japa of Śiva’s names (especially “Mṛtyuñjaya” and the Pañcākṣarī, Om Namaḥ Śivāya) along with liṅga-pūjā, cultivating fearlessness and surrender.
