વસિષ્ઠનું આ સંક્ષિપ્ત ત્રિષ્ટુભ સૂક્ત દિવ્ય આપઃ (જળ) ની સ્તુતિ કરે છે—તે પ્રાચીન, સ્વયં-શુદ્ધિકારક શક્તિઓ છે, જે જગતમાં વહેતી રહી શુદ્ધિ આપે છે—અને તાત્કાલિક રક્ષણ તથા કલ્યાણ માટે પ્રાર્થના કરે છે. તેમાં જળોને ઇન્દ્રની ઉત્સાહદાયક શક્તિ સાથે અને સત્ય-અસત્ય પર નૈતિક દેખરેખ રાખનાર વરુણના અધિકાર સાથે જોડવામાં આવ્યા છે; તેથી જળોને ભૌતિક શુદ્ધિકારક ઉપરાંત ઋતના રક્ષક તરીકે પણ રજૂ કરવામાં આવે છે. અંતે વરુણ, સોમ, સર્વ દેવો અને વૈશ્વાનર અગ્નિ—આ બધાં જળોમાં નિવાસ કરે છે એમ કહી, જળોને બ્રહ્માંડિક તથા યાજ્ઞિક જીવનને ધારણ કરનાર આધાર-માતૃકા તરીકે સ્થાપિત કરે છે.

Mantra 1
समुद्रज्येष्ठाः सलिलस्य मध्यात्पुनाना यन्त्यनिविशमानाः । इन्द्रो या वज्री वृषभो रराद ता आपो देवीरिह मामवन्तु ॥
સમુદ્રમાં જ્યેષ્ઠા, જળના મધ્યમાંથી—પુનાના (શુદ્ધ થતી) —સ્થિર નિવાસ વિના આગળ વધે છે. જેઓ જળોને વજ્રધારી, વૃષભ ઇન્દ્રે ગર્જનાવ્યાં—એ દેવીઓ આપઃ અહીં મારી રક્ષા કરે.

या आपो दिव्या उत वा स्रवन्ति खनित्रिमा उत वा याः स्वयंजाः । समुद्रार्था याः शुचयः पावकास्ता आपो देवीरिह मामवन्तु ॥
જે આપઃ (જળો) દિવ્ય છે, અથવા વહે છે; અથવા કૂવામાંથી ખોદી કાઢેલાં છે, અથવા સ્વયંજન્ય છે; જે સમુદ્ર તરફ ગતિ કરે છે—એ તેજસ્વી, પાવક, શુચિ જળદેવીઓ, અહીં મારી રક્ષા કરો.

यासां राजा वरुणो याति मध्ये सत्यानृते अवपश्यञ्जनानाम् । मधुश्चुतः शुचयो याः पावकास्ता आपो देवीरिह मामवन्तु ॥
જેનાં મધ્યમાં રાજા વરુણ વિહરે છે, મનુષ્યોમાં સત્ય અને અસત્યને નિહાળી—મધુ ટપકાવતી, શુચિ, પાવક, તેજસ્વી એવી જળદેવીઓ, અહીં મારી રક્ષા કરો.

यासु राजा वरुणो यासु सोमो विश्वे देवा यासूर्जं मदन्ति । वैश्वानरो यास्वग्निः प्रविष्टस्ता आपो देवीरिह मामवन्तु ॥
જેનામાં રાજા વરુણ અધિપતિ છે, જનામાં સોમ વહે છે, જનામાં સર્વ દેવો ઊર્જાના વધારમાં આનંદિત થાય છે; અને જનામાં વૈશ્વાનર અગ્નિ પ્રવેશ્યો છે—એ જળદેવીઓ અહીં મારી રક્ષા કરો.
Frequently Asked Questions
It is a short hymn to the divine Waters (Āpaḥ), praising their power to purify and asking them to protect the worshipper. It also links the waters with Varuṇa’s moral order and with Soma and Agni.
Because Varuṇa is the guardian of ṛta (right order). The hymn says he moves within the waters, watching truth and falsehood, so water becomes a symbol of both physical cleansing and ethical clarity.
It is commonly suited to simple purification acts like sipping or sprinkling water before prayer or ritual. Reciting the hymn with clean water and the refrain asking protection is the basic, traditional application.
