Diti’s Lament
On the Fall of the Daityas and the Futility of Grief
evametaṃ hi vṛttāṃtaṃ ditiḥ śuśrāva dāruṇam | ditiruvāca | vajrapātopamaṃ bhadre vadasyevaṃ kathaṃ mama
Diti
Concept: Hearing the consequences of conflict with dharma can strike like a thunderbolt; grief arises when attachment meets cosmic law.
Application: When painful truth arrives, pause before reacting; let shock become discernment—ask what must change rather than only who is to blame.
Primary Rasa: karuna
Secondary Rasa: bhayanaka

Sandhi Resolution Notes:
Diti is speaking, reacting with shock and sorrow; she says the statement she has heard feels like a thunderbolt blow.
It is an upamā (simile): the impact of the words is compared to a vajra-pāta, a thunderbolt strike.
The verse highlights how harsh truths and dire narratives can deeply wound; it implicitly counsels compassionate speech and sensitivity in conveying painful matters.
