Concept: Mahāvratas and broad puṇya-karmas reach siddhi through the complete dharmic household order; the gṛhapatnī is treated as a necessary co-agent in many rites.

Application: When undertaking vows, ensure ethical foundations: shared responsibility, consent, and supportive community; treat spiritual disciplines as integrated with relational duties, not opposed to them.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: karuna

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A vow-taking scene: a householder stands before a small Viṣṇu altar with a vow-thread and water pot, while an empty place beside him underscores incompletion. Scroll-like inscriptions of ‘mahāvrata’ and ‘puṇya’ float subtly in the background, suggesting that merit depends on proper dharmic wholeness.","primary_figures":["gṛhastha (vow-taker)","Viṣṇu (as household deity icon)","brāhmaṇa advisor (optional)"],"setting":"interior household shrine with tulasī-vedikā hinted outside the window, ritual vessels arranged for sankalpa","lighting_mood":"lamp-lit","color_palette":["warm ghee-gold","vermillion red","ivory","peacock blue","shadow umber"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: a richly ornamented Viṣṇu icon in a home shrine with gold leaf halo; the gṛhastha holds a sankalpa water pot and sacred thread, an intentionally empty seat beside him; heavy gold embellishment on lamps and arch, rich reds/greens, gem-like detailing, solemn vow atmosphere.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: intimate indoor shrine scene with delicate lines, cool yet warm lamp glow; the vow-taker’s face shows restraint, an empty cushion beside him; refined textiles, subtle floral patterns, lyrical quietness.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: stylized Viṣṇu icon with bold outlines, the devotee in profile holding a kalaśa; strong red/yellow/green pigments, rhythmic patterns on the shrine wall, didactic calm.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: central Viṣṇu shrine framed by lotus and creeper borders; ritual vessels arranged symmetrically, empty seat motif rendered with garland outline; deep blues and gold, intricate floral filigree, devotional order."}

Sandhi Resolution Notes: पुंसोपि → पुंसः अपि; भार्याहीनस्य = भार्या-हीनस्य (षष्ठी-तत्पुरुष)

FAQs

No. It emphasizes that certain “mahāvratas” and household-based rites are traditionally structured around the gṛhastha (householder) framework, where wife and husband jointly perform ritual duties.

The verse highlights the ideal of shared religious responsibility in household life—many rites and vows are conceived as being completed through the partnership of husband and wife.

It underscores interdependence and responsibility: dharma is not only personal austerity but also relational duty, cooperation, and sustaining righteous life through family obligations.
