The speaker is Vṛtra. He begins by requesting the listener to hear him and then states his identity and origin, a common Purāṇic device for establishing a character’s lineage and role in the narrative.
It emphasizes pedigree and cosmic genealogy: Agni is invoked as the immediate source of birth, while Kaśyapa—an important progenitor in Purāṇic tradition—is identified as the father, grounding Vṛtra’s identity within revered ancestral lines.
The verse highlights the Purāṇic theme that understanding a being’s origins and relationships (lineage, duties, and affiliations) is important before judging actions—identity is framed through dharmic and cosmic connections rather than mere appearance.
