The Sumanā Narrative: Vaiṣṇava Hospitality, Āṣāḍha Śukla Ekādaśī, and the Rise to Brāhmaṇahood

āmaṃtrya vipraṃ sa jagāma gehaṃ tāṃ prāpya bhāryāṃ sumanāṃ praharṣaḥ | sarvaṃ hi vṛttaṃ mamapūrvaceṣṭitaṃ tenaiva vipreṇa tava prasādāt

FAQs

It emphasizes gratitude and humility: one should acknowledge that success comes through the help of the virtuous (here, the brāhmaṇa) and through grace (prasāda), not merely through one’s own effort.

In Purāṇic ethics, the vipra often symbolizes dharma, counsel, and ritual-spiritual support. The verse credits the turning of events to the brāhmaṇa’s role, underscoring respect for righteous guidance.

The speaker models accountability and devotion: recognizing benefactors, attributing outcomes to higher grace, and avoiding pride in one’s “previous efforts” (pūrvaceṣṭita).
