शतार्धकोटिविस्तारा पृथिवी कृत्स्रशो द्विज ।

तस्या हि स्थानमखिलं कथयामि शृणुष्व तत् ॥

śatārdha-koṭi-vistārā pṛthivī kṛtsraśo dvija |

tasyā hi sthānam akhilaṃ kathayāmi śṛṇuṣva tat ||

માર્કંડેયે કહ્યું—હે દ્વિજ! પૃથ્વીનો સંપૂર્ણ વિસ્તાર પહોળાઈમાં ‘સો ને પચાસ કરોડ’ (યોજન) છે. હવે હું તેની સમગ્ર ગોઠવણી/રચનાનું પૂર્ણ વર્ણન કરીશ—સાંભળો.
