Yudhiṣṭhira’s Lament for Karṇa and Renunciation-Oriented Self-Assessment
vayaṃ tu lobhān mohāc ca dambhaṃ mānaṃ ca saṃśritāḥ | imām avasthāṃ samprāptā rājyā-lābha-bubhutsayā ||
Yudhiṣṭhira identifies greed (lobha) and delusion (moha) as inner causes that lead to moral downfall, manifesting outwardly as ostentation (dambha) and pride (māna). The verse warns that craving for power and its pleasures corrupts judgment and results in suffering.
In the Śānti Parva’s opening lament, Yudhiṣṭhira reflects on the catastrophe surrounding kingship and war. Speaking in self-reproach, he admits that the desire to obtain and enjoy the kingdom pushed “us” into arrogance and brought them to a miserable state.
