Vipulopākhyāna—Ruci-rakṣā and Śakra’s Māyā (विपुलोपाख्यानम्—रुचिरक्षणं शक्रमाया च)
भीष्म उवाच क्रिया भवति केषांचिदुपांशुव्रतमुत्तमम् । यो यो याचेत यत् किज्चित् सर्व दद्याम इत्यपि
bhīṣma uvāca
kriyā bhavati keṣāñcid upāṃśu-vratam uttamam |
yo yo yāceta yat kiñcit sarvaṃ dadyām ity api ||
ભીષ્મે કહ્યું— યુધિષ્ઠિર! કેટલાંક માટે યજ્ઞકર્મ, ગુરુદક્ષિણા, કુટુંબપાલન વગેરે ક્રિયાઓ જ અભિષ્ટ હોય છે; અને કેટલાંક માટે ઉપાંશુ—મૌન-સંયમનું વ્રત—સર્વોત્તમ શિસ્ત છે. તેથી જે યાચક જે કંઈ માગે, તેના પ્રત્યે ‘હું આપીશ’ એવો ભાવ રાખવો જોઈએ; કોઈને નિરાશ કરીને પરત ન મોકલવો.
