Bhīṣma’s Yogic Departure, Royal Cremation, and Gaṅgā’s Lament (भीष्मस्य योगयुक्त्या देहत्यागः, पितृमेधः, गङ्गाविलापः)
अप्येवात्मवध॑ लोके राजंस्त्वं बहु मन्यसे । न हि प्रतिज्ञा या दत्ता तां प्रहातुमरिंदम
apy evātmavadhaṁ loke rājan tvaṁ bahu manyase | na hi pratijñā yā dattā tāṁ prahātum arindama ||
ભીષ્મે કહ્યું— રાજન! શું તું આ લોકમાં આત્મવધને જ વધુ મહત્ત્વનો માર્ગ માને છે? શત્રુદમન! તું આપેલી પ્રતિજ્ઞા ત્યાગવી તને શોભતી નથી. શત્રુઓને જીતીને ન્યાયપૂર્વક પ્રજાપાલન કરવાનો વ્રત તું લીધો છે; શોકવશ આત્મહત્યાનો વિચાર કરવો એ ધર્મસંકલ્પથી પછડાવું છે.
