Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda/Vainateya)

Beneficiary: Pitr

Concept: Reciprocity (tṛpti ↔ tarpaṇa): when the intended recipients are satisfied, they confer supportive fruits—family continuity and prosperity; also signals that adhikāra and kriyā-bheda govern proper performance.

Vedantic Theme: Karma-phala-niyama under dharma: results arise in an ordered way when actions are performed with proper eligibility and procedure.

Application: Follow eligibility rules and rite-variants carefully; understand śrāddha as strengthening family stability and resources through disciplined observance and generosity.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Related Themes: Garuda Purana 2.8 (adhikāra and kriyā-bheda discussion continuing into 2.8.9–11)

FAQs

This verse indicates a reciprocal principle: when the Pitṛs are satisfied through proper offerings, they ‘satisfy’ the living family—supporting continuity through offspring, household stability, and prosperity.

While not describing the travel of the preta directly, it frames the ritual economy around the departed: correct rites (with proper eligibility and method) are taught because they affect the post-death condition and the well-being of the lineage.

Perform ancestral rites with clarity about procedure and eligibility, and treat them as a discipline of gratitude and responsibility toward lineage—supporting ethical living, family harmony, and dhārmic continuity.
