श्रीराजोवाच देवासुरनृणां सर्गो नागानां मृगपक्षिणाम् । सामासिकस्त्वया प्रोक्तो यस्तु स्वायम्भुवेऽन्तरे ॥ १ ॥ तस्यैव व्यासमिच्छामि ज्ञातुं ते भगवन् यथा । अनुसर्गं यया शक्त्या ससर्ज भगवान् पर: ॥ २ ॥
śrī-rājovāca devāsura-nṛṇāṁ sargo nāgānāṁ mṛga-pakṣiṇām sāmāsikas tvayā prokto yas tu svāyambhuve ’ntare
શ્રીરાજાએ કહ્યું—સ્વાયંભુવ મન્વંતરમાં દેવો, અસુરો, મનુષ્યો, નાગો, પશુઓ અને પક્ષીઓની જે સૃષ્ટિ થઈ, તે તમે સંક્ષેપમાં કહી છે. હવે, હે ભગવન, હું એ જ વિષયનું વિસ્તૃત વર્ણન જાણવા ઇચ્છું છું; તેમજ પરમ ભગવાને કઈ શક્તિથી અનુસૃષ્ટિ (દ્વિતીય સૃષ્ટિ) રચી તે પણ જાણવા માગું છું।
