The Greatness of Bhasma, Rudrākṣa, and the Name of Śiva
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Rudra
Significance: The verse uses the wildfire metaphor to teach pāpa-dāha: Śiva’s Name functions as a purifying fire that destroys karmic bondage (pāśa).
Type: stotra
It teaches that Śiva’s Name is not merely symbolic; it is a vehicle of Śiva’s grace that incinerates accumulated pāpa (sin/impurity) like a wildfire reducing trees to ash, supporting the Shaiva Siddhanta emphasis on purification and divine anugraha (grace).
The verse highlights nāma-bhakti (devotion through the Name), which complements Saguna worship such as Linga-pūjā: chanting Śiva’s Name while offering water, bilva leaves, and reverence to the Linga directs the mind to Śiva and accelerates inner purification.
Regular japa of Śiva’s Name—especially the Panchākṣarī mantra “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”—with steadiness and devotion; it may be paired with simple Śiva-pūjā and contemplative remembrance (smaraṇa) as a daily purification practice.
