Praṇava-Māhātmya and the Twofold Mantra (Sūkṣma–Sthūla) in Śaiva Sādhanā
उत्तरोत्तर वै शिष्ट्यात्पूजायामुत्तरोत्तरम् । फलं वैशिष्ट्यरूपं च दुर्विज्ञेयं मनीषिभिः
uttarottara vai śiṣṭyātpūjāyāmuttarottaram | phalaṃ vaiśiṣṭyarūpaṃ ca durvijñeyaṃ manīṣibhiḥ
En vérité, plus le culte (pūjā) devient raffiné et accompli selon la juste règle, plus son fruit s’élève de degré en degré. Pourtant, la nature distinctive et graduée de ces fruits est difficile à sonder, même pour les sages.

Significance: Teaches that increasingly refined worship yields increasingly subtle fruits, whose gradations are ultimately known fully only by Śiva—encouraging humility and sincerity in pilgrimage and pūjā.
Offering: pushpa
It teaches that Shiva-worship is not mechanically equal in outcome; as devotion, purity, and right method mature, the spiritual fruit rises—ultimately tending toward Shiva’s grace (anugraha) and inner purification.
Linga-puja to Saguna Shiva admits levels—outer offerings, inner reverence, mantra-japa, and contemplative absorption. The verse highlights that increasingly ‘well-formed’ worship yields increasingly subtle and exalted results.
Refine daily Shiva-puja by adding steady Panchakshara japa (Om Namaḥ Śivāya), maintaining cleanliness and right intention, and concluding with silent dhyana—so the worship becomes ‘uttarottara’ (progressively superior).
