ब्राह्मणं श्रेष्ठमाहूय यत्काले सुसमाहितम् । तदर्थं शब्दमर्थं वा सद्बोधकमभीष्टदम्
brāhmaṇaṃ śreṣṭhamāhūya yatkāle susamāhitam | tadarthaṃ śabdamarthaṃ vā sadbodhakamabhīṣṭadam
Au moment convenable, après avoir fait venir un brāhmane éminent, l’esprit bien recueilli, qu’on recherche auprès de lui un enseignement véridique—soit la parole juste (mantra/enseignement), soit le sens juste (son intention)—car une telle guidance est sûre, éveille la compréhension droite et accorde ce qui est désiré.

Sthala Purana: The verse emphasizes approaching a ‘श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मण’ at the right time for ‘śabda’ (mantra/authoritative utterance) or ‘artha’ (meaning/doctrine). This mirrors the Śaiva Siddhānta stress on guru-upadeśa: right word and right meaning awaken sadbodha.
Significance: Highlights the necessity of competent instruction for effective worship and right understanding—pilgrimage and ritual are perfected by correct upadeśa.
Role: teaching
It emphasizes that spiritual progress in Shaiva dharma depends on timely, disciplined seeking of right instruction from a qualified, steady-minded teacher—guidance that gives sadbodha (true awakening) and leads toward the desired goal, ultimately moksha through Shiva’s grace.
Linga worship is not merely external; it requires correct mantra and correct understanding of its meaning. The verse points to receiving both “śabda” (mantra/ritual injunction) and “artha” (inner purport), aligning outer Linga-puja with inner devotion and right knowledge of Shiva.
It suggests taking mantra-upadeśa (authoritative instruction) at the proper time from a composed teacher—especially the Panchakshara mantra and its meaning—so that japa and worship are performed with right understanding and focused mind.
