Praise of Śaiva Dharma and the Fivefold Classification of Practice
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Sadāśiva
Significance: Assures liberation (mokṣa) through firm establishment in the Supreme (Śiva-tattva) and attainment of supreme yoga.
Role: liberating
It declares the fruit of Shaiva sadhana: firm establishment in the highest truth, refined dharmic conduct, and attainment of supreme yoga culminating in moksha—liberation by Shiva’s grace, free from doubt.
In the Shiva Purana’s Shaiva Siddhanta tone, disciplined conduct and yoga mature through devotion to Saguna Shiva (often approached through Linga-worship), which purifies the pashu (soul) and loosens pasha (bondage) until the soul is established in Pati (Shiva).
The verse points to a life of anuttama-vṛtti (excellent conduct) supported by paramayoga—typically realized through steady japa of the Panchakshara (Om Namaḥ Śivāya), dhyana on Shiva/Linga, and Shaiva observances such as bhasma (Tripundra) and rudraksha as aids to concentration and purity.
