Shiva Purana — Rudra Samhita, Shloka 7

शिवतेजसः समुद्रे बालरूपप्रादुर्भावः (Śiva’s Tejas Manifesting as a Child in the Ocean)

Suta Goswami

Tattva Level: pashu

Shiva Form: Bhairava

Sthala Purana: The verse highlights the reaction of lokas and lokapālas: agitation and bewilderment. In Siddhānta terms, this is the paśu-condition under tirodhāna—cosmic concealment—where beings cannot immediately recognize the divine play behind terrifying phenomena.

Significance: Teaches humility: even cosmic administrators (dikpālas) are unsettled without Śiva’s anugraha. Encourages surrender and seeking grace rather than relying on status or power.

Mantra: नमः शिवाय

Type: panchakshara

Cosmic Event: Universal agitation; dikpālas mentally overwhelmed by the emanation’s cry.

FAQs

The verse highlights the overwhelming potency of the divine presence: even an outwardly simple act like a child’s cry can shake the cosmos, indicating that all realms and powers remain dependent on the Supreme Lord’s will and shakti.

It supports Saguna understanding—God’s power is revealed through perceivable forms and events. Such līlā strengthens devotion and reverence, guiding devotees from awe at manifested power toward steadiness in worship that ultimately leads to realization of Shiva as the supreme reality.

A practical takeaway is to cultivate steadiness through japa of the Panchākṣarī mantra (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) and grounding disciplines like Tripuṇḍra bhasma and Rudrākṣa, which stabilize the mind when outer events feel unsettling.
