The Initiate’s Son in Distress and the Occasion of Śivarātri Worship

Role: protective
It depicts how ordinary perception, dominated by fear, reacts to the unknown; Shaiva teaching points beyond such agitation toward taking refuge in Pati (Śiva), the steady Lord who dispels inner fear and ignorance.
The verse shows the mind’s tendency to grasp and control; Linga/Saguṇa-Śiva worship trains the devotee to replace fear-driven reactions with reverence, surrender, and recognition of the Lord’s presence even in unexpected forms.
As a practical takeaway, calm fear through japa of the Pañcākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya” and steady the mind with Tripuṇḍra-bhasma remembrance of impermanence and Śiva as the ultimate refuge.
