The Initiate’s Son in Distress and the Occasion of Śivarātri Worship
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
Significance: Temple-entry and rule-based worship (yathocita) with purified mind (sucitta) are portrayed as the normative Siddhānta approach: kriyā (ritual) supporting yoga and jñāna, culminating in grace.
Role: nurturing
Offering: pushpa
The verse emphasizes that true Śiva-pūjā is not merely external ritual but worship performed with śuddha-citta (purified mind) and śiva-sakti-dhī (steady absorption in Śiva), aligning devotion with inner transformation toward Śiva’s grace.
By highlighting entry into the śivālaya and ‘yathocita’ worship, it points to Saguna Śiva worship—commonly through the Śiva-liṅga in the temple—performed according to injunctions, as a means to approach the Supreme Lord with reverence and discipline.
It suggests disciplined temple pūjā done ‘as prescribed’ along with mental purity—practically supported by japa of the Pañcākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya), and traditional aids like bhasma (tripuṇḍra) and rudrākṣa where appropriate.
