सेवातत्त्वप्रश्नः — The Question of Whom to Serve (Sevā) for the Removal of Suffering
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Paśupatinātha
Sthala Purana: Not a Jyotirliṅga narrative; it universalizes practice: worship and allied duties should be done wherever devotion arises, indicating portability of bhakti and regularity of dharma.
Significance: Encourages continuous practice beyond pilgrimage sites: even away from major shrines, pūjā/dāna sustain purity; neglect invites pāpa (bondage-strengthening).
Role: nurturing
Offering: dhupa
It teaches that bhakti is not merely an inner feeling; it must be stabilized through Shiva-oriented kriyā—worship, offerings, and charity—so that the devotee’s life remains aligned with dharma and protected from the drift toward pāpa.
The verse supports Saguna upāsanā: wherever one is, one can honor Shiva through Linga-pūjā or simple acts of reverence (water, bilva, mantra). Devotion becomes complete when expressed in concrete worship rather than remaining only mental.
Maintain regular Shiva-pūjā as possible (even minimal offerings), add dāna according to capacity, and support it with mantra-japa—especially the Pañcākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”—so devotion is continuously enacted.
