चिरात्तपःप्रसंगाद्वै वादः क्षुवदधीचयोः । महानर्थकरः ख्यातस्त्रिलोकेष्वभवत्पुरा
cirāttapaḥprasaṃgādvai vādaḥ kṣuvadadhīcayoḥ | mahānarthakaraḥ khyātastrilokeṣvabhavatpurā
Il y a longtemps, à cause d’un long attachement aux austérités, une querelle s’éleva entre Kṣuva et le sage Dadhīca. Ce conflit devint célèbre dans les trois mondes comme la cause d’un grand malheur.

It warns that even sacred tapas can become spiritually harmful when it turns into attachment, pride, or rivalry—creating karma that disturbs not only the individual but the wider moral order (triloka).
In Shaiva practice, worship of the Linga (Saguna Shiva as a focus) purifies intention and dissolves ego; this verse highlights that without surrender to Shiva, austerity alone may harden the sense of ‘I’ and lead to conflict.
Perform tapas with humility by anchoring it in japa of the Panchakshara (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) and offering the fruits of discipline to Shiva; this guards against ego-driven disputes.
