Inquiry into the Ten Principal Śaiva Vratas
Suta Goswami (traditional Purāṇic colophon context, narrating to the sages of Naimiṣāraṇya)
Sthala Purana: Colophon (iti…): a textual closure identifying the Koṭirudrasaṃhitā, the Vyādheśvara-māhātmya frame, and the chapter topic (Śivarātri-vrata-mahima).
Significance: Serves as a śāstra-marker for reciters and listeners, ensuring correct textual anchoring and transmission of the vrata teaching.
This is a colophon verse marking the completion of the chapter that teaches the glory of observing the Śivarātri vrata—affirming its importance as a Shaiva discipline that supports purification, devotion (bhakti), and the pursuit of Shiva’s grace.
By situating the teaching within the Vyādheśvara Māhātmya of the Koṭirudra-saṃhitā, it links Śivarātri observance to temple/Liṅga-centered worship (saguṇa upāsanā) where Shiva is adored through vrata, pūjā, and pilgrimage traditions.
It points to the practice of observing Śivarātri as a vrata—typically involving night-long wakefulness, Shiva pūjā to the Liṅga, mantra-japa (often the Pañcākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”), and disciplined devotion.
