Visvamitra and Vasistha: Contest of Divine Weapons
तस्यास्त्रं गाधिपुत्रस्य घोरमाग्नेयमुद्यतम्।ब्रह्मदण्डेन तच्छान्तमग्नेर्वेग इवाम्भसा।।।।
tasyāstraṃ gādhiputrasya ghoram āgneyam udyatam |
brahmadaṇḍena tac chāntam agner vega ivāmbhasā ||
L’effroyable arme Agneya, décochée par le fils de Gādhi, fut apaisée par le bâton de Brahma, comme l’élan du feu est dompté par l’eau.
At this, Vasishta the most brilliant ascetic became quiet. The humiliated Viswamitra heaved a sigh and spoke these words:
Unchecked aggression is naturally checked by higher, disciplined power; Dharma implies that destructive force must yield to spiritual restraint.
Viśvāmitra releases the fire-weapon, but Vasiṣṭha’s Brahma-staff neutralizes it effortlessly.
Vasiṣṭha’s mastery through tapas—calm control rather than escalating violence.
