Vena’s Inquiry into Pitṛ-tīrtha: Pippala’s Austerity, the Vidyādhara Boon, and the Crane’s Rebuke of Pride

FAQs

It highlights the power of tapas (austerity) and inner tejas (spiritual radiance): even while suffering physical harm, the ascetic brāhmaṇa remains luminous, suggesting steadfastness and endurance on the dharmic path.

The pippala (aśvattha) is a revered sacred tree associated with sanctity and vitality. The comparison suggests visible spiritual brilliance and sacred presence—an outward sign of inner discipline and merit.

The verse frames suffering and hostility as tests of kṣānti (forbearance). It implies that spiritual practice may continue even amid adversity, and that one’s inner state need not be ruled by external aggression.
