Sumanā and Somaśarmā: Tapas at the Kapilā–Revā Confluence and the Theophany of Hari

शरणं तस्य गंतास्मि सदागतिरयं मम । झंझावातो महाचंडो वपुर्दूयति मे भृशम्

śaraṇaṃ tasya gaṃtāsmi sadāgatirayaṃ mama | jhaṃjhāvāto mahācaṃḍo vapurdūyati me bhṛśam

Vers Lui j’irai chercher refuge : Lui seul est à jamais mon vrai recours. Un vent de tempête, violent et terrible, souffle, et mon corps est cruellement tourmenté.

Unspecified (context-dependent within Bhūmi-khaṇḍa 19)

Concept: In bodily torment and external chaos, the devotee’s ‘always-true resort’ is the Lord alone.

Application: When circumstances ‘storm,’ reduce choices to one anchor practice: daily japa/reading, a simple offering, and a single dharmic action; treat discomfort as a cue to remember the refuge.

Primary Rasa: karuna

Secondary Rasa: bhayanaka

Type: forest

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A furious gale bends trees nearly to breaking as dust and leaves spiral around a trembling devotee clutching a simple cloth. In the storm’s heart, a calm, luminous Vishnu-presence appears like a still center—an oval aura of light—inviting surrender while the wind rages harmlessly around it.","primary_figures":["a distressed devotee","Vishnu (as a radiant presence or four-armed form)","storm personification (subtle)"],"setting":"Wilderness path or forest edge with whipping branches and flying debris, suggesting a pilgrim caught in nature’s fury.","lighting_mood":"storm-darkness pierced by a steady inner glow","color_palette":["charcoal gray","pale lightning white","saffron gold","forest green","dusky brown"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: central Vishnu calm and radiant with gold-leaf halo; storm rendered as stylized swirling motifs around the edges; devotee kneeling with añjali, garments blown sideways; rich maroon-green background, gold highlights on aura and ornaments, ornate frame emphasizing protection.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: dynamic wind lines through slender trees; devotee small against nature, Vishnu’s soft radiance forming a protective circle; delicate brushwork for flying leaves; muted mountain-like palette with a warm golden focal glow.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: bold spiral wind patterns, stylized trees; Vishnu with strong outlines and serene eyes; devotee in expressive posture; earthy pigments with a bright yellow aura dominating the composition.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: storm abstracted into swirling floral-vortex motifs; central protective mandala around Vishnu; border of lotuses and vines; deep indigo and gold with rhythmic decorative symmetry."}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"meditative","suggested_raga":"Desh","pace":"slow-meditative","voice_tone":"emotional","sound_elements":["howling wind (soft underlay)","distant thunder","single bell strike at cadence ends","silence after each pāda"]}

Sandhi Resolution Notes: गंतास्मि = गन्ता + अस्मि (नकार-लोप/अनुस्वार-लेखन परम्परा); सदागतिरयं = सदा + गतिः + अयम् (इः + अ → इर्, ततः संधि).

FAQs

It expresses śaraṇāgati—turning to a higher divine protector as the sole refuge, especially when overwhelmed by suffering.

It can be read literally as a fierce wind causing physical distress, and symbolically as life’s turmoil that drives the devotee toward refuge.

In hardship, one should seek the highest refuge with steadiness rather than panic—cultivating humility, dependence on dharma, and devotional surrender.
